How I Got Into Photography

March 17, 2008 Photography, Life Add Comment

I really enjoy taking photographs. And I have more than one digital camera that enables me to do so.

And since a couple of people (Jill, ahem) who regularly read this site have suggested (ie- insisted) that I include more posts about what I do in my life, I’ve decided to quote a conversation about how I got into photography.

You might find this interesting, as I’ve never told anybody (ever!) this story, until now:

skyline.jpgI came to photography from more of a journalistic background (that was my major). I started out documenting events for newspapers and websites, but what really pushed me into photography was 9/11. Cause I was in my dorm room when it happened and one of my first thoughts was to document the event (after the inital shock).

But I didn’t have a digital camera then, and I only had a disposable with 2 exposures left. I used them, but I realized that day that I needed to be better prepared.

Ever since then, I always have a camera on me — either in my pocket, in my car, or at work. At first it was for “just in case” purposes, but then, since I had cameras all over all of the time, I started taking more and more photos of everything. And I love it now. I can’t stop shooting, heh.

Its sort of interesting that my experience on 9/11 turned my life upside-down (and I don’t just mean photographically) and my site layout right now is that upside-down city skyline. Strange, isn’t it? But what in life isn’t…

Jeff Burton wins the Food City 500

March 16, 2008 NASCAR, News, Sports Add Comment

#31 Jeff Burton won the Food City 500 at the always crazy Bristol Motor Speedway Sunday, after a late wreck by #20 Tony Stewart in the last two laps:

NASCAR Food City 500

When Hamlin’s fuel pickup burped in Turn 4 of the next-to-last lap, it set up a 1-2-3 finish for Richard Childress Racing teammates Burton, Harvick and Bowyer on the .533-mile concrete short track that was resurfaced before the August race last year.

The Childress drivers also benefited when Harvick took out the race’s dominant car, Tony Stewart’s No. 20 Toyota, on Lap 498 to set up the two-lap run to the finish. After a restart on Lap 496, Hamlin passed Stewart for the lead. A lap later, in Turn 1, Harvick nosed inside Stewart, slid up into the No. 20 and sent Stewart spinning into the Turn 2 wall.

Stewart had led 267 laps to that point but had to settle for a 14th-place finish. It was the third consecutive spring race at Bristol where Stewart led the most laps, yet failed to win.

SMOKE UPDATE: Tony Stewart led 267 laps at Bristol, but was forced into a 14th-place finish due to the careless driving of #29 Kevin Harvick. Stewart and Harvick may be friends off the track, but as a #20 fan, I can admit I let out more than one expletive as I saw Smoke turned around with 2 laps left. Can’t Home Depot Racing catch a break this season?

Next up, the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway a week from Easter Sunday.

Democrats Are at Odds Over Plans for 2 States: “After a week of shadowboxing, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama on Wednesday issued their clearest statements yet on the impasse over the disputed Florida and Michigan primaries. Naturally, they staked out opposing and irreconcilable positions.” Whew, and I was worried there would be some terribly distracting self-created problem that would hurt the Democrats in the 2008 Presidential Election… (0) [link]
