My new favorite shows were cancelled!

May 19, 2006 Media, News, Television

The networks have let us down again. What a disappointing week of upfront presentations.

Besides the annual event of moving great shows into the same time slot against each other — time to get a dual tuner TiVo, I guess — the networks seemingly cancelled almost every new show that was interesting this season.

Let’s take a look and award some blame awards:

Blame NBC… for cancelling The Book of Daniel because of criticism, the virtually guaranteed Dick Wolf show Conviction for no reason, Seth Green’s hilarious Four Kings, the unique robber-centric Heist, and Teachers, even if it was slow to take off.

Blame ABC… for cancelling a new way to present a crime drama in The Evidence, Commander in Chief after totally mis-managing its PR all season long, the engaging and socially moral drama In Justice, and alien drama Invasion after making viewers wonder what the hell was going on all season long.

Blame FOX… for cancelling Arrested Development because they didn’t understand the Bluths, Reunion and it’s promising year-an-episode format, and That ’70s Show after failing to keep Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher and adding that annoying younger brother of SNL’s Seth Myers.

Blame the CW… for cancelling Everwood and bringing 7th Heaven back from the dead.

Thanks for wasting our time, networks.

Cancelling shows struggling in ratings isn’t new or unexpected in the world of television, but this season’s cancellations was simply a massacre of established shows, some with fairly strong followings.
