Katie Holmes delivered a baby girl Tuesday, just one year after they started dating:

Actor Tom Cruise and his fiance, actress Katie Holmes, welcomed the birth of a daughter on Tuesday, according to Cruise’s publicist.

They named the girl Suri, which “has its origins in Hebrew, meaning ‘princess,’ or in Persian, meaning ‘red rose,’ ” Cruise spokesman Paul Bloch said in a statement.

The baby weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, he said, and was 20 inches long. Both mother and daughter were doing well, Bloch said.

Hell immediately froze over. Domain names SuriCruise.com and SuriHolmes.com were immediately registered. And, of course, blogs and magazines are going wild with the news.

So I guess they’re going to get married afterall? Sigh. Katie, it wasn’t supposed to happen this way.

Here’s some fun info about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes:

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born on July 3, 1962 in Syracuse, New York.

Katherine Noelle Holmes was born two months premature at four pounds on December 18, 1978 in Toledo, Ohio.

Goodbye Tommy Hilfiger, Hello Nikon!

The Tommy Hilfiger at Jones Beach Theatre is now the Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre.

Its the latest in the naming rights saga for the outdoor Long Island ampitheater:

After four years of sponsorship and naming rights, the clothing manufacturer’s signs began to come down at the seaside, 15,200-seat amphitheater yesterday.
[…]
Tommy Hilfiger U.S.A. Inc.’s contract would have allowed the company to renew its sponsorship arrangement for another six years. But the company was purchased and its new owners declined to remain at the park.

The venue is great, no matter what it’s name. I’ve seen Alanis Morisette, The Doors, and Eminem there, among others.

I, for one, welcome the name change. The only thing I got out of the first naming scheme were a few free vials of Tommy cologne at the concerts.

Now maybe I’ll get a free digital camera next time I’m there…

“The Loop” product placement

While watching tonight’s season finale of the funny new sitcom The Loop on FOX, the show joked about product placement — with actual product placement. I think.

FOX's The Loop cast photo It’s all a bit confusing, really. If you’re a fan of The Loop, then you know that every once in a while during an episode the show is “paused” and captions are used to display contextual jokes.

Well, in tonight’s episode Amanda Loncar’s Piper character was standing in front of her mirror, trying on an outfit that included a denim skirt. So she says, “Wow, I look great in this Old Navy Skirt!” and then (product placement) appeared on the bottom of the screen.

Then, immediately following, an Old Navy commercial (the “Summertime Boyfriend” ad where the models are all dancing on a rooftop) came on.

So does that mean the product placement gag was actual product placement? Did Old Navy pay for the joke and then the adjacent commercial spot or did the show throw the joke in on their own and FOX ad sales then pointed it out to Old Navy, who decided to buy the spot?

Money must have exchanged hands somewhere here. Anyone have any insight they want to share?

Cheney booed at Nationals home opener

Vice President Dick Cheney was booed as he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Washington Nationals Home Opener today.

The Mets were in DC and beat the Nationals 7-1, which also made me pretty happy.

Apparently, President Bush also received mostly boos last week when he visited Ohio to throw out the ceremonial pitch for the Cincinnati Reds Home Opener.

At least someone was happy to see Cheney at the game, and he happened to be a Mets player:

New York third baseman David Wright said he was thrilled to meet Cheney and shrugged off the booing.

“When you’ve got 50 percent of America that’s Republican, 50 percent that’s Democrat, you’re probably going to get mixed reviews,” Wright said.

Wright is so diplomatic.

Bushisms for everyone!

I just don’t understand why people around the world can’t take President Bush seriously.

While addressing quarreling Iraqi leaders on Wednesday, Bush advised that the different sects should come together to form a coalition government:

“It’s about time you get a unity government going,” Bush said, addressing Iraqi leaders. “In other words, Americans understand newcomers to the political arena, but pretty soon it’s time to shut her down and get governing.”

Get governing already, Iraq! What are you waiting for?

Those people that write those “Bushism” books should be publishing future editions way into the next president’s term.
