Best postseason collision in baseball

October 10, 2005 Baseball, Sports

If you were just watching the Yankees - Angels ALDS Game 5, then you just witnessed what has to be the best outfield collision in baseball!

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, with two Angels on base, Yankees outfielders Bubba Crosby and Gary Sheffield both chased a long fly ball all the way out to the warning track. As they both lept for the ball, they collided, with the ball deflecting off Sheffield’s wrist and Sheffield’s body checking Crosby into the wall.

Crosby stumbled to his feet first and managed to throw the ball, which was rolling about ten feet away, to the infield. The Angels batter ended up with a triple and two runs scored, giving the Angels the lead, 3-2.

As a Mets fan, I’ve seen many, many (maybe too many) fielding collisions — from the outfield to the infield to foul territory (and sometimes with three players!) — but I’ve never seen a collision quite as spectacular as this. It was tantamount to an NFL tackle, sans padding.

Let’s see if this costly error will cause the Yankees the game, and, in turn, a chance to face the White Sox in the ALCS.
