Slingbox: Introducing Placeshifting
We interrupt this awkward staggered posting schedule here at CityCynic.com to bring you the latest in TV-Internet convergence technology: SlingBox.
No, it has nothing to do with Sling Blade, a fine movie in its own right. Someone will explain where the name came from in due time, I hope.
SlingBox allows you to watch your TV from home on your computer anywhere — and all you need is to hook it up to your cable/satellite connection and your home broadband network.
Then you can watch Six Feet Under while lounging on the grass in Union Square Park, for instance, or Family Guy on your lunch break at work.
Right — this thing is cool! And for all you TiVo junkies out there — SlingBox not only lets you control what you watch with a virtual remote, it also lets you control your TiVo box to watch your saved shows!
Looks like you can get this baby from Best Buy (accepting orders) and CompUSA (seemingly in stock) currently for $249. Sounds like a good deal to me.
