Slingbox: Introducing Placeshifting

We interrupt this awkward staggered posting schedule here at CityCynic.com to bring you the latest in TV-Internet convergence technology: SlingBox.

No, it has nothing to do with Sling Blade, a fine movie in its own right. Someone will explain where the name came from in due time, I hope.

SlingBox allows you to watch your TV from home on your computer anywhere — and all you need is to hook it up to your cable/satellite connection and your home broadband network.

Then you can watch Six Feet Under while lounging on the grass in Union Square Park, for instance, or Family Guy on your lunch break at work.

Right — this thing is cool! And for all you TiVo junkies out there — SlingBox not only lets you control what you watch with a virtual remote, it also lets you control your TiVo box to watch your saved shows!

Looks like you can get this baby from Best Buy (accepting orders) and CompUSA (seemingly in stock) currently for $249. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Citizen Journalism in the London Terror Attacks

Citizen journalism played an important part in telling the story of the 7/7 London Terror Attacks.

CNN has an article about that cell phone video clip circulated by the AP and played thousands of times during yesterday’s coverage:

Bombing horror captured on phones:

The video was grainy, shaky but undeniably compelling: Passengers standing in the aisle of a subway car, its windows shattered following one of the coordinated explosions in London.

It was the first time several U.S. television executives could recall using video taken from a cellular phone during coverage of a major story, no doubt a harbinger of things to come. […]

“No question about it,” [Jonathan Klein, CNN’s U.S. chief] said. “There’s been a lot of talk in terms of the increased democratization of the news media relating to blogs and the like. This is another example of the citizen journalist.”

It’s good to see recognition of the importance citizen journalists (including bloggers) play in informing the public during major news events. And we’re definitely going to be seeing more and more citizen journalism in the near future.

Sarah Vowell fills in for Maureen Dowd

Sarah Vowell has taken over Maureen Dowd’s column at the New York Times (temporarily) and she is doing a great job.

Today’s column is definitely a must-read. She writes about what televangelist Pat Robertson recently did to, fior the first time, impress her. A Pat on the Back:

Robertson is one of the people in this dream I’ve had for 20 years, a nightmare I call “the handshake dream.” In it, I am attending some G.O.P. all-star party. (A girl can dream.) And I have to decide whose hand I deign to shake. Bob Dole and John McCain: of course (war heroes). Orrin Hatch: fine (stem cells). But Robertson? He’s always been a solid “No way!” as he sulks by the punch bowl with Strom.

I enjoy Vowell’s tone and writing in this article, much like the dry wit she uses in her latest book “Assassination Vacation,” which recounts her trips to the locations where presidents were assassinated. You may have seen her appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien or the Late Show with David Letterman.

Happy Birthday, America!

July 4, 2005 Life Add Comment

Happy Independence Day!

Can you believe it? America is 229 years old!

Although flag lapel pins aren’t currently in style, be sure to hang your flag for everyone to see! Or just wear one of those Old Navy flag tees you have lying around the house. That works, too!

Happy Birthday to me!

July 2, 2005 Life Comments (3)

Happy Birthday to me! That’s right, you’ve heard correctly — today is my birthday!

Twenty-four years ago this very day, I was born somewhere in New York.

I’ve learned many things along the way to 24 and met many great people. Twenty-three years seems like a lot, though. But I’m feeling excited about all the new things I’ll experience as a 24-year-old.

If you are as excited about life as I am at this moment, then send me a birthday gift now and restore your previously damaged karma. You’ll feel better, it’ll bring you good luck, and it will help me get a laptop that works!

Before you celebrate your freedom, celebrate me! But seriously, a simple birthday wish from you, my friends, family, and loyal readers is all I can ask for! :)

Let’s hope 24 goes a hell of a lot better than 23 did!
